Edited PLTW Presentation for Pear Deck

During my final weeks, prior to lessons, Digital Electronics students got a pear deck that made them familiar with the topic so that they could set up their engineering notebooks.

Note: A significant amount of the instruction I gave was using PLTW curriculum and materials. Evidence shared in this portfolio shows either how I adapted PLTW materials for my purposes, supplement work I designed alongside the curriculum, or examples of student work.

Classroom Posters

These posters about boolean algebra were printed and posted around the classroom for student reference.

I developed the "Knowledge Checklist" assessments as a low-stakes method of assessing student knowledge.

Where lessons were often given on Monday and the respective assignment due that Friday evening, I would give out this assessment to be completed by the end of the class. Open-notes, collaboration friendly, and graded on completion over accuracy, I had more students provide an honest attempt at these than their usual assignments, which allowed me to provide feedback on misunderstandings and see where they were struggling.

Knowledge Checklists

When learning how to set up Seven Segment displays, students were given a print-out to apply their knowledge by displaying the day of the month their birthday is on, using an anode and cathode respectively. This both allowed students to uniquely apply themselves to the assignment, as well as limiting cheating, as students had to write their unique number for it.

Makers for a Better Future

Makers for a Better Future was experimental programming aimed towards vocational engineering classrooms. I was tasked with designing and implementing an Additive Manufacturing Unit from the materials they gave us. The resulting curriculum incorporated the real-world elements provided by Makers for a Better Future with a project from PLTW called "Charmed, I'm Sure."

Charmed, I'm Sure

Charmed, I'm Sure, while getting used for the CIM class, was pulled from PLTW's Intro to Engineering (IED) class, but was still relevant and skill-appropriate for the students. This project paired off students and had them work as Designer and Client for each other (such that they were each making designs for who they were paired with). Clients would provide the designers a design brief with things that they are interested in, Designers would create 3 concept sketches for the Client to choose and sign off on, and the selected design was then designed isometrically and in CAD for 3D Printing.
